Strategic Biofuels hits major milestone on Louisiana project with Class VI well permit
Major step forward for the Louisiana Green Fuels carbon removal project being advanced by Strategic Biofuels and Carbon Direct

NEW YORK, NY / CALDWELL PARISH, LA — February 06, 2026 — Carbon Direct is pleased to share that Strategic Biofuels has hit a major milestone in its push toward carbon removal, as well as creating clean, reliable energy, by securing a draft Class VI Well Permit from Louisiana's Department of Conservation and Energy.
As Strategic Biofuels explains in its announcement, this is a rare authorization that only three other entities in the state have previously obtained, and the first ever granted for a project involving multiple wells. The approval advances the Louisiana Green Fuels (LGF) project, a strategic collaboration between Strategic Biofuels and Carbon Direct located in northeast Louisiana, which provides biomass-based power and long-term carbon removal.
"This permit is a landmark milestone, and a clear signal of the momentum Strategic Biofuels has built over five years of deliberate, strategic progress toward commercialization and scale," said Greg Fitzgerald, Vice President of Supply for Carbon Direct. "LGF earned its place in our portfolio through a rigorous scientific and deliverability review, and we're proud to be working alongside the Strategic Biofuels team as we move toward delivering high-quality tonnes to our clients."
In September 2025, Carbon Direct and Strategic Biofuels announced their collaboration to jointly advance the Louisiana Green Fuels (LGF) project. LGF will combine bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) to remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere while producing clean, firm electricity. This collaboration marked a significant step forward in scaling up durable carbon dioxide removal solutions and supporting the clean energy transition nationwide.
The LGF project will deliver high-quality, durable carbon removal at a BECCS facility in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana. This biomass power plant will use abundant regionally sourced forestry residues and sawmill waste to generate clean, firm electricity. Once operational, the project is expected to sequester over one million metric tons of CO₂ each year in deep saline formations through three nearby Class VI geologic sequestration wells. The facility will power its CCS operations and export 75 MW of electricity to the Louisiana grid, directly supporting decarbonization goals.
LGF will serve as a keystone for a Green Energy Corridor in North Louisiana and is projected to create more than 75 direct full-time jobs and 300 indirect jobs in Caldwell Parish. The project has been designed with long-term workforce training and community investment in mind to support durable climate solutions while delivering long-term benefits for the local communities.
Carbon Direct’s scientists work with the LGF project team to ensure ongoing best-in-class alignment with the Criteria for High-Quality Carbon Dioxide Removal. For more information on Carbon Direct and credit availability, visit https://www.carbon-direct.com/services/carbon-credits.
