Collaboration advances innovative Louisiana Green Fuels carbon removal project

NEW YORK, NY / CALDWELL PARISH, LA — 9/18/215 Carbon Direct and Strategic Biofuels today announced their collaboration to jointly advance the Louisiana Green Fuels (LGF) project, an innovative carbon removal project located in Northeast Louisiana. LGF will combine bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) to remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere while producing carbon-negative electric power. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in scaling up durable carbon dioxide removal solutions and supporting the clean energy transition nationwide.

The LGF project will deliver high-quality, durable carbon removal at a BECCS facility in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana. This biomass power plant will use abundant regionally sourced forestry residues and sawmill waste to generate carbon-negative electricity. Once operational, the project is expected to sequester over one million metric tons of CO₂ each year in deep saline formations through three nearby Class VI geologic sequestration wells. The facility will power its CCS operations and export 75 MW of electricity to the Louisiana grid, directly supporting decarbonization goals.

“Our goal has always been to deliver best-in-class durable credits to the market,” said Jon Goldberg, CEO, Carbon Direct. “Over the past five years, Strategic Biofuels has become a leader in this space, moving thoughtfully and strategically towards commercialization and scale. We’re excited to deliver high-quality tonnes exclusively to our clients through the LGF project, a project that stood out in our rigorous scientific and commercialization evaluation.”

LGF will serve as a foundation for a Green Energy Corridor in North Louisiana and is projected to create more than 75 direct full-time jobs and 300 indirect jobs in Caldwell Parish. The project has been designed with long-term workforce training and community investment in mind to support durable climate solutions while delivering long-term benefits for the local communities.

“The LGF project reflects our commitment to advancing clean energy with purpose and precision, and as one of the world’s few carbon-negative power plants, it will set a new standard for climate innovation,” said Dr. Paul Schubert, CEO, Strategic Biofuels. “Our collaboration with Carbon Direct to secure high-quality carbon dioxide removal credits ensures the project delivers measurable impact while laying the foundation for transformative clean energy development in Louisiana.”

Carbon Direct’s scientists are working with the LGF project team to ensure best-in-class alignment with the Criteria for High-Quality Carbon Dioxide Removal. For more information on Carbon Direct and credit availability, visit https://www.carbon-direct.com/services/carbon-credits.
