Microsoft raises the bar for high-quality carbon removal

"The technical expertise of Carbon Direct has been critical in executing our carbon removal strategy. Through the development and refinement of the Criteria for High-Quality Carbon Dioxide Removal, we’re working together, using our collective experience and expertise to deliver a framework that can catalyze just, effective climate action at scale."

Katie Sierks

Carbon Removal Senior Program Manager, Microsoft

Microsoft and Carbon Direct have been committed to the development of effective carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions since the release of the first Criteria for High-Quality Carbon Dioxide Removal in 2021. Together we are working to address the quality challenges in the voluntary carbon market and drive effective climate action by developing a set of science-based benchmarks that can be used by the broader CDR community.

The 2023 edition of the Criteria incorporates both the latest science and equity considerations in a constantly evolving field. This document advances the common definitions for high-quality CDR solutions outlined in our essential principles, and introduces new criteria for emerging carbon removal methods like enhanced rock weathering (ERW). It also expands on the principles of environmental justice for meaningful community engagement and a just transition to a low-carbon future.

We’re pleased to have Carbon Direct continue to refine the Criteria in an effort to strengthen common standards for both developers of projects to follow as well as educate buyers how to identify high-quality projects.
